Homeless Single Mother Gains New Confidence

When she first came to Goodwill, Danika, a single mother with a disability, was unemployed and homeless following an eviction. VR Nevada referred her to participate in Goodwill’s two-week Community Based Training (CBT) program to assess her readiness for retail employment.

The compounded stresses of homelessness, lack of access to clean clothing, and caring for her son, Danika struggled through the assessment. While she was not recommended for employment, she did not give up—and neither did Goodwill.

When Danika re-enrolled in the CBT program, her trainer ensured she had one-on-one guidance and support, as well as reminders to stay on task. Danika passed her assessment with flying colors, which affirmed not only her readiness for employment, but also her sense of self-worth and confidence. Above all, she is eager to be able to financially support her son.

As Danika prepares to pursue employment as a stocking clerk at a major retailer or a ride operator at an indoor theme park, she dreams of being financially independent and living in her own apartment with her son.

Goodwill prepared Danika for meaningful employment.
