Struggling Mom Finds Her Career Calling

A single parent of two young children, La-Toya was underemployed and struggling to pay for necessities. Even with the assistance of SNAP benefits, it was a challenge for her to feed her family and fuel her car. Seeking housing stability for her family, La-Toya contacted the Southern Nevada Housing Authority, which referred her to the Goodwill Career Center at The Boulevard Mall.

Guided by her Goodwill career coach, La-Toya saw a path to meaningful employment in healthcare. After exploring various options, La-Toya saw her dream job: a phlebotomist specializing in taking samples of blood for testing.

The Goodwill career coach guided La-Toya through a series of job development assessments to determine her suitability for a career in phlebotomy. La-Toya’s assessment results, stellar work ethic, and positive attitude quickly led Goodwill to invest in her phlebotomy training. Goodwill also provided additional support services to remove any barriers to her pursuit of a career with family-sustaining wages and upward mobility.

La-Toya not only successfully completed phlebotomy training, but she secured an employment offer before she graduated. Since launching her new career as a phlebotomist at Talecris Plasma Resources in Las Vegas, La-Toya has significantly increased her income and is able to provide for her family.

Goodwill of Southern Nevada celebrates La-Toya’s initiative, hard work, and future as a successful healthcare professional and provider to her family.
