College Grad Detours to Truck Driving Career
After earning a bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Jezai pursued employment in that field for two years without success. Because employers leaned toward veterans, firefighters, and others with prior experience, even with a degree she was limited to security, retail, and other low-paying jobs.
After researching ways to make herself more marketable, Jezai saw a career path: earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL), become a professional truck driver, then leverage that experience and her degree to become a dispatcher, trainer/facilitator, or owner-operator.
Although she was confident in her plan, Jezai lacked the financial means to put it into action. After researching funding options, she worked with an agency for months to secure a grant. Unfortunately, by the time she completed the long list of requirements, she was informed that funding had ceased for CDL training programs.
Jezai was referred to Goodwill, where a career coach secured City of Las Vegas ARPA grant funding to subsidize tuition at Southwest Trucking Driver Training. Upon completion of training, Jezai was immediately offered employment with KMND Trucking LLC.
With Goodwill’s help, Jezai is on track to earn a livable wage, gains valuable experience, and advance her career with restored confidence.
Goodwill jump-started Jezai’s plan for career traction.
