Mom of Five Earns CNA, Begins Career
Janae Smith’s previous experience as a caregiver inspired her to pursue a medical career as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Having heard about tuition assistance offered by Goodwill® for CNA training, she reached out to a career coach at the Goodwill Career Center.
For many years, Janae had dreamed of becoming a CNA, but she had yet to be able to afford the cost of training. As a single mother of five, Janae directed all her earnings to her household. As much as she struggled to make ends meet, Janae did not have the financial means to achieve a better-paying, stable career.
“When I heard about the CNA training program, it gave me hope. As I took the journey, having the NV HOPE and Goodwill family behind me made it possible—not only for financial support, but also emotional and informational support, and belonging.”
As an only child with both parents deceased, Janae had no support system in place. “It meant everything to me to have such a great group of people support me throughout my journey,” said Janae.
Janae successfully completed training, passed all exams, and earned her credential. She is now employed full-time as a CNA, earns
a livable wage, and is proud to serve as a positive role model for her children.
Goodwill supported Janae’s journey in many ways.
