Air Force Veteran Finds His Footing

At the time he left the Air Force in 2013, Francis was serving as an aircraft armament systems specialist—a position that did not translate to civilian job opportunities. As he pondered his career path, he settled for jobs at fast food restaurants.

After moving from Florida to Las Vegas, Francis was unable to find employment that paid a living wage. Within a couple of months, he was unable to cover his bills and  found himself at risk for losing his housing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Francis sought guidance from a Veterans Affairs counselor, who in turn referred him to Goodwill of Southern Nevada for career services and financial assistance.

Francis enrolled in Goodwill’s free Veteran Integration Program, which provided financial assistance for housing as well as one-on-one career coaching. His career coach—a fellow veteran—completed a skills assessment, researched the labor market, and found an ideal career path for Francis: commercial truck driving.

Goodwill’s Career Services added professional guidance, resume assistance, rental housing and transportation assistance, and funding for occupational training in commercial driver’s license (CDL) Truck Driving. After obtaining his CDL, Francis was quickly hired by May Truck Driving Company. “This is the best job I have ever had!” said Francis. “They really take care of me here.”

Goodwill helped Francis transition from the military.
