Determined Man Gains Skills and Confidence
Javier had been let go by his previous employer, who could no longer pay him due to a change in state funding. Referred by VR Nevada to the Goodwill Community Based Training program, Javier participated in a 20-day retail and janitorial assessment to gauge his readiness for employment.
During his assessment, Javier’s trainer offered one-on-one coaching and simplified tasks as he gauged the impact of his developmental disability. His trainer quickly discovered that Javier was “an awesome greeter” as he welcomed and provided information to customers as they entered the store.
Although Javier did not pass his assessment, he showed high aptitude for customer service and made invaluable connections with Goodwill team members and acquired valuable skills to prepare him for a career in retail. He now hopes to work as a greeter at Walmart—a goal that, with his new training, Javier feels is finally within reach.
Goodwill offered Javier a place to shine.
