Military Spouse Thrives in Healthcare Profession
As the spouse of an active-duty U.S. Air Force service member, Melissa desired a career that could thrive as military assignments took her family from place to place.
Melissa had already earned bachelor’s degrees in Journalism and Fashion Merchandise when she was referred to Goodwill by a fellow military spouse who had worked with a career coach specializing in military families. While she was initially interested in exploring substitute teaching, Melissa was drawn to another highly mobile, helping profession: healthcare.
Goodwill’s Medical Assistant Training program proved to be a perfect fit for Melissa, and even more so due to her expecting a baby. The innovative, in-person, three-month program was developed to help expand the number of medical assistants (MAs) available to work in regional healthcare clinics and facilities. The program’s accelerated “Training Sprint” model would ensure Melissa could complete the program in just three months. Melissa welcomed her healthy baby boy into the world in June before beginning a 1,200-hour externship as she earned her MA certification.
Melissa graduated among the top three in her cohort, distinguishing herself as a role model through her commitment, determination, and mentorship of classmates. Even more, Melissa excelled while concurrently taking classes in a post-baccalaureate pre-med program, as well as serving as a substitute teacher at a private elementary school in Summerlin.
“The MA program was essential to my success!” said Melissa, acknowledging her Goodwill career coach’s vital assistance with launching her career in the medical field. Melissa is currently employed as a full-time MA at a clinic in Summerlin.
Goodwill helped Melissa secure her family’s future.
