RN Resuscitates Career After Military Move

When Yukari moved from her native Japan to Nevada with her U.S. Air Force service member husband, roadblocks kept her from continuing her career as a registered nurse (RN). Yukari enrolled in the Goodwill Dislocated Worker’s Grant, a program dedicated to assisting veterans and spouses of active-duty military with training and employment.

Yukari affirmed her interest in continuing her RN career path now that she was living permanently in the United States. A Goodwill career coach helped Yukari navigate the process to transfer her training and schooling credits from Japan. The clearest path was to initially pass the New York State nursing exam, with the resulting U.S. license qualifying her to get certified in Nevada. In April 2021, Yukari passed the Nevada state certification exam and PTE Academic test of English skills, enabling her to practice as an RN in her new home state.

In addition to assisting her with gaining her RN credentials, Goodwill career coaches helped Yukari and her family with transportation costs, living costs, and other life necessities as she focused on gaining licensure and permanent employment.

In July 2021, Centennial Hills Hospital hired Yukari as a full-time RN. Deeply grateful to Goodwill for helping her and her family in her time of need, Yukari was eager to help others just the same with her return to a role she knows so well.

Goodwill bridged Yukari’s return to nursing.
