Single Mom Takes Major Steps Forward

When she first came to Goodwill, Danika, a single mother with a disability, was unemployed and homeless following an eviction. VR Nevada referred her to participate in Goodwill’s two-week Community Based Training (CBT) program to assess her readiness for retail employment.

The compounded stresses of homelessness, lack of access to clean clothing, and caring for her son, Danika struggled through the assessment. While she was not recommended for employment, she did not give up—and neither did Goodwill.

When Danika re-enrolled in the CBT program, her trainer ensured she had one-on-one guidance and support, as well as reminders to stay on task. Danika passed her second assessment with flying colors, setting the stage for employment as an attractions attendant at a local theme park.

Danika said that the part of her assessment that helped her the most with her new job was learning how to interact with customers. She is proud to earn an income, provide for her son, and work towards her goals of being financially independent and living in her own apartment with her son.

Goodwill prepared Danika for meaningful employment.
