Spirited Woman Works Beyond Barriers

When she was referred by VR Nevada to Goodwill’s Community-Based Training program, Katrina was eager to explore retail as a career path. While she knew her cerebral palsy and developmental disabilities could pose challenges in any future job search, Katrina was resolved to succeed.

To determine her readiness for employment, Katrina participated in a 20-day retail assessment. During their time together, her trainer was sure to accommodate her unique developmental and physical qualities, such as the limited use of her left hand, to support Katrina’s efforts. By offering repeated verbal and modeled instructions, one-on-one coaching, and assistance with handling merchandise, her trainer brought out the best in Katrina. By the end of the assessment period, he determined that with the right training, Katrina could run the cash register and stock merchandise independently. Her trainer proudly recommended Katrina for job placement.

Katrina is still charting her path forward, but as she considers her options, the valuable skills she honed during her training will serve her well in her search for a thriving career.

Goodwill equipped Katrina to thrive in retail.
