Underemployed Man Takes the Driver’s Seat

After years of being underemployed, Jose was struggling to provide for his family. As he charted his next steps, he wanted not just another job but a fulfilling and stable career that would secure his family’s future.

He set his sights on becoming a professional truck driver and mapped out the necessary steps to make that happen. But he faced a financial roadblock: to earn his commercial driver’s license (CDL), he would need to find a way to cover the cost of tuition for a CDL training program.

Jose met with a Goodwill career coach, who walked him through the enrollment process for tuition assistance. Thanks to Goodwill, he was able to secure the funding he needed to complete his training and earn his CDL certification.

He is now gainfully employed as a CDL truck driver. So far, he has traveled across 30 states and traversed some of the nation’s most challenging terrain, including the Sierra Nevada’s infamous Donner Pass.

He looks forward to hitting the open road for many years to come. “Never did I imagine being successful at my age, let alone to accomplish a goal in life like this one,” he said. “It was for sure no easy task, but definitely an experience I would not change for the world.”

Jose credits Goodwill with helping him lay the groundwork for “a lucrative career and a fulfilling future.” Above all, he cherishes the ability to take care of his family. “I feel blessed and just overjoyed to have found an organization that believes in people and is willing to help them in their success, just like me.”
