Woman Achieves Dream Career in Welding
Nakisha had worked steadily as a server and in the trade show industry but was laid off during the pandemic and unable to find suitable employment. Seeking a stable career, Nakisha came to the Goodwill Career Center at The Boulevard Mall seeking assistance with vocational training. She had already done some exploration of a career in welding, a field that had long fascinated her.
Nakisha’s Goodwill career coach helped her secure a grant and approval for training at the Las Vegas Institute of Welding, where she excelled in learning the skills needed to graduate. Once she completed her training, a company that creates structures and backgrounds for shows and concerts hired Nakisha as a full-time welder.
In short order, she set her sights on joining the Sheet Metal Workers union apprenticeship program. “I’m thankful to Goodwill for their grant,” said Nakisha. “It gave me the opportunity to acquire a skill that I wouldn’t have been able to learn on my own. I am so happy to be on this new journey in my life!”
Goodwill supported Nakisha’s pursuit of a stable career.
