Making a Career Transition to Healthcare
Leah was looking for new career opportunities when she saw a morning news segment that would change her trajectory. An interview with a Goodwill spokesperson inspired Leah to go to Goodwill and meet the team herself.
Eager to learn about professional opportunities and changing careers, Leah quickly found Goodwill had the answers she was looking for. One-on-one career coaching revealed her interest in pursuing healthcare as a career as well as new ways to approach barriers such as lack of certification as she searched for a job in the field.
She completed the 90-Day Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program, developed by Intermountain Health in partnership with NV Careers and supported by Goodwill of Southern Nevada as the agency partner in the community. 90-Day MA is a jump-start program that provides unemployed or underemployed community members with no prior experience the ability to enter the healthcare workforce through a paid apprenticeship. Upon graduation of the 90-Day program and coursework, the apprentices complete 1,200 clinical hours of training within the Intermountain clinic space before full-time employment as an MA. Leah is now working in the field as an apprentice and looks forward to the opportunity to test for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) credential to become officially certified in the profession at the national level.
Leah is enjoying her new career path in the medical field. She is eager to gain hands-on experience, hone her interpersonal skills, and care for patients as she sets her sights on her dream job and becoming a CCMA.
Goodwill gave Leah the tools to change course.
