Young Man Gains Sense of Independence

Gavin struggled with a learning disability which made it difficult for him to find work. A referral by VR Nevada for a work assessment and employment training through Goodwill’s Community Based Training (CBT) program gave him hope that some career certainty could lessen his stress.

To help overcome Gavin’s learning challenge, a Goodwill skills trainer worked with him one-on-one to assess what kind of employment opportunity he might enjoy and determine which tasks are best suited for him. Working in Goodwill’s retail environment, Gavin learned customer service skills as well as operational functions such as merchandise processing, using a computer to print price tags, distributing goods to the sales floor, and stocking media. He particularly enjoyed the warehouse processing assignments.

Gavin’s trainer noticed a boost in his confidence when he rose to the challenge of working independently on assigned tasks. Gavin completed his assessment and is now optimistic about securing a job in retail.

Goodwill helped Gavin work with confidence.
